On January 31, 2006, the Weatherhead School of Management brought media relations expert and Affiliate Instructor Nancy Valent to campus to deliver Media Relations: Image, Positioning and Crisis Control. Recognizing that a company’s image can be built or destroyed in the media, executives and managers from across the region took this opportunity to learn firsthand how to deal with the media during crisis situations and everyday business activities.
Throughout the day, participants learned and practiced the skills to represent themselves and their organizations positively, clearly and honestly. Focusing on the perspective of a typical reporter, Valent helped participants develop insight, communications capability and confidence. Participants even had a chance to participate in on-camera, mock interviews in order to fully prepare themselves for real-life situations. “Over the last ten years, I have trained over 100 executives in being prepared for the hard-hitting media interview,” said Valent. “This class at Case was exceptional in quickly focusing on developing the message points and utilizing techniques learned in the morning session for their afternoon on-camera interviews.”
Michael Schuster, Vice President of Communications Services at ABB, Inc. found the seminar to be both interesting and insightful. “The knowledgeable staff coupled with the interactive peer sharing format contributed to the overall positive impact of the program,” commented Schuster. “I will have other members of my staff attend future sessions and would recommend the program to anyone who might face the media under any circumstances.”
Participants may have entered the classroom anxious and unprepared, but by the end of the workshop, they left with a confidence that will ensure their success in protecting their company’s image, brand and perception in the marketplace.
