Health Management Scholars Program Will Combine Weatherhead MBA, Management Training at the Clinic

CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management and The Cleveland Clinic are joining forces to train professionals interested in managing health care institutions.
The Weatherhead School and the Clinic are launching the Health Management Scholars Program in the fall of 2006. The program will enroll up to four Health Management Scholars in the Weatherhead School’s full-time MBA program. In addition to taking the school’s Health Systems Management concentration, the scholars will fulfill their action learning requirements at the Clinic and will complete summer internships there. The scholars will also attend a seminar in which Clinic managers will serve as guest speakers.

“We are delighted to enter into this collaboration with The Cleveland Clinic,” said Myron Roomkin, dean and Albert J. Weatherhead, III Professor of Management. “The Health Management Scholars Program offers students the benefit of a world-class academic experience at the Weatherhead School, while gaining first-hand exposure to the management of one of the world’s great health care institutions. All the parties involved will benefit.”

J.B. Silvers, the Treuhaft Professor of Health Systems Management and faculty director of the Health Systems Management Center at the Weatherhead School, said the scholars program is a natural outgrowth of long-standing ties between the two institutions. Clinic executives frequently enroll in the school’s executive education program, and the Clinic often hires Weatherhead graduates.
“We’ve had conversations over the last few months with Clinic representatives about how to enhance our relationship, and this program seemed to be the natural next step,” Silvers said. “Our goal is nothing less than to attract the very best people worldwide and prepare them to be the future leaders in bioscience and health system management.”

“The health care industry is extremely complex and constantly changing,” said Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., president and chief executive officer of The Cleveland Clinic. “The Health Management Scholars Program provides students with an outstanding opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to direct experience in one of the world’s leading academic health care systems giving them unparalleled insight into health care administration.”
