FirstEnergy's seven electric utility operating companies -- including The Illuminating Company and Ohio Edison -- comprise the nation's fifth largest electric system, based on 4.4 million customers served, within a 36,100-square-mile area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
FirstEnergy is one of Ohio’s largest corporations, with revenues of $12.5 billion in 2004, and is a strong economic driver for Northeast Ohio. FirstEnergy companies currently have more than 13,000 employees in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
For 2005 and beyond, FirstEnergy’s business model remains unchanged – to be the leading regional retail energy and related-services supplier; the preferred choice for total customer solutions; shareholders’ choice for long-term growth and investment value; and a company that is driven by the skills, diversity, flexibility and character of its employees.
FirstEnergy’s workforce – like that of other comparable companies – is aging. In 2002, 14 percent of America’s workforce was age 55 or older. At FirstEnergy, about 18 percent of our employees are age 55 or older with 27 percent of that number coming from our Energy Delivery operations, which include linemen and substation personnel
“To compliment our existing employee talent, over the next several years we will be recruiting many highly motivated people from outside our company to ensure that we continue to provide reliable, responsive service to our customers,” says FirstEnergy’s President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Alexander.
"We are taking these steps now so that new employees will have adequate opportunities to benefit from working side-by-side with our experienced and knowledgeable veterans," Mr. Alexander said. "We want to make sure there is sufficient time for a transfer of knowledge to occur through ongoing mentoring and on-the-job training.”
In April of this year, FirstEnergy hosted about 30 Case Western University students at its headquarters in downtown Akron. This initial “FirstEnergy/Case Interactive Event” gave Case students an opportunity to learn more about the company by talking one-on-one with FirstEnergy executives. In addition, FirstEnergy representatives will participate in the Case Career Fair on September 22.
