CLEVELAND, OHIO--Continuing an exceptional and varied career, former Plug Power CEO Dr. Roger Saillant of Watervliet, New York, has accepted the post of Executive Director at the Fowler Center for Sustainable Value at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Saillant will join the Fowler Center's team in November and will work alongside the faculty and staff of the Weatherhead School. The Fowler Center practices, researches, and teaches whole-system design methods for advancing the 'how-to' of sustainability and works with businesses, organizations, and economic regions to discover the power and promise of sustainability as an innovation engine for doing good and doing well.

As a recognized authority in renewable energy and sustainability, Dr. Saillant has been a pioneer in fuel cells, energy policy, and holistic management techniques. His extensive corporate experience includes seven years as CEO of Plug Power, a cutting-edge fuel cell company. Prior to that, he was a senior executive at Ford Motor Company and Visteon Corporation, and he has worked to open plants and operations in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Dr. Saillant teaches and speaks on sustainability issues, and recent speaking engagements have been at leading colleges and universities including the Sloan School at MIT, Fordham University, and New York University. He currently teaches climate change in Marlboro College's graduate MBA in Managing for Sustainability in Brattleboro, Vermont. Another of his passions is communicating these various sustainability concerns to mainstream society--in this vein, he has recently co-authored a novel, Vapor Trails, dealing with some of today's hottest issues, such as climate change, carbon sequestration, and corporate control. The book has received excellent expert reviews.

"We are very fortunate to have a person of Roger's leadership experience and stature in the sustainability movement join the Fowler Center," said Ron Fry, Chair of Weatherhead's Department of Organizational Behavior and Chair of the Fowler Center's Executive Director Search Committee. "We were immediately drawn to Roger's passion for sustainable enterprises and his drive to have the Fowler Center known as a world center of excellence for both local and global impact towards a sustainable future for all."

"I am excited to come to Cleveland because of its grassroots groundswell in sustainability," said Dr. Saillant. "I'm looking forward to opportunities to have deep and meaningful conversations with leaders from the business, government, and Case Western Reserve communities. We have exciting challenges and an abundance of positive energy and resources with which to address them and make meaningful progress." Cleveland was named one of Fast Company's Fast Cities for 2009, and this September, Mayor Frank Jackson named a Chief of Sustainability to help guide the region-wide mission to build a sustainable economy. The Fowler Center and Weatherhead School of Management have served as senior advisors to the city's efforts, and the school of management also has integrated core curriculum on sustainability and social entrepreneurship into its MBA program, with the goal of teaching whole-systems integration of sustainability.
