Posted 10.31.07Weatherheadlines sits down with undergraduate finance major Saarah Ahmad.
In which program are you enrolled?
I am an undergraduate Management major with a concentration in Finance.
What do you hope to accomplish in your time here at Weatherhead?
Since I started at Weatherhead, my goal has always been to build upon the skills that I have and develop new ones to help start and advance my career in finance. I don’t just value the education, but everything I’ve learned and continue to learn about how things work in the business world. I hope that by the time I graduate, I’ll be in a position to land a great job that I love and be able to begin my career.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Cleveland and when I was 2 years old, my family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota. We lived there until I was 8, when we moved back to Cleveland. Since then, we’ve been here.
What brought you to Weatherhead?
The fact that it was close to home was definitely one of the deciding factors for me to go to Case. I entered undecided, but was very interested in business. Once I was here, I started taking classes at Weatherhead and really liked the program so I decided to stick with it.
I understand you just got an internship for the academic year, care to tell us more?
I recently started an internship with Merrill Lynch in downtown Cleveland. I’m excited about the opportunity because I feel like working in that environment will really give me good experience to draw from once I graduate and am looking for jobs. It has only been a few days so far, and I’m already learning a lot about the culture. I also see, on a daily basis, how what I’ve learned in my finance classes is implemented at work, and it’s actually really exciting! Since my work is divided between two supervisors, I get hands on experience working with two different aspects of Wealth Management. Hopefully, I’ll be able to benefit from the internship even more as I get further into it.
Do you have any thoughts about what type of career you would like to pursue upon completion of your degree?
Right now, I’m still unsure about what I will be doing after graduation, but I really like finance. I’m hoping that the internship with Merrill Lynch will help guide my in the right direction. One of the main things I’ve learned as an undergrad is the ability to use the skills I have and apply them to anything. Like with the Merrill Lynch internship, I hope that I can draw from what I’ve learned at Weatherhead and apply it to any job I find interesting and worthwhile.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Shopping, watching movies and traveling are probably my favorite things to do in my spare time. I enjoy traveling abroad, but when I don’t have the time to do that, my favorite place to visit is Chicago. I also love to paint - even though I don’t always make time for it in my life. My friends and family are always a priority, so whenever I can, I try to just be with them.
What is the last good book you have recently read or are currently reading?
I just recently read Muhammad Yunus’ book Banker to the Poor. I was very interested in microfinance and, having read the book, am even more so now. I highly recommend it to anybody who is even curious about the concept. It’s well written and explains microfinance in an easy to understand, yet comprehensive way.
