B·A·W·B Summit Seeks to Transform Management Curriculum

The Center for B·A·W·B in conjunction with the Aspen Institute’s Teaching Innovation Project (TIP) will host a summit to change the face of management curriculum at Weatherhead October 19-21, 2005, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Case’s Thwing Student Center.
Entitled The Future of Management Education at the Intersection of Business and Society, the summit will bring together a broad range of internal and external stakeholders for this first-of-its-kind school-wide Appreciative Inquiry (AI) Summit with the goal of working to accelerate change in management education at Weatherhead as a model for other schools by integrating sustainability and social impact leadership into the entire curriculum.
The goal of the summit is to provide leadership on the issue of transforming management education. In generating our research and teaching agenda, we will serve as a “learning laboratory” for other management schools. B·A·W·B is one of the newly created “schools-within-the-school” at Weatherhead. This means it is a cross disciplinary center that is responsible for research and curriculum innovation at the intersection of business and society. This summit serves as the first school-wide coming together of all B·A·W·B stakeholders.
During this three-day working session students, faculty, staff, as well as external stakeholders including CEOs, scholars from the academy, and executives from other leadership institutes will come together. The meeting will simultaneously be a “think-tank”—looking at the future of management education in areas related to sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, and business social entrepreneurship—as well as a “design session”—where we will be designing prototypes for the School within a School. The result of these working design sessions will be the publishing of a workbook of new management curriculum which will be made available to faculty members from Case and other universities interested in integrating corporate social responsibility and sustainability into their current curriculum. Places such as the Aspen Institute, the UN Global Compact and the World Business Academy have pledged their support.
Featured speakers include Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface, Inc.; William Starbuck, professor in residence at the Lundquist College of Business of the University of Oregon and a former president of the Academy of Management; Hazel Henderson, President of EthicMark; Jim Walsh, a professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Management and part of the Aspen TIP team; and Alan Meyer, a professor of entrepreneurial management at the University of Oregon. Through The Center for B·A·W·B, Case’s Weatherhead School of Management is one of 11 schools - only four of which are in the U.S. – to be chosen by the Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program as part of its Teaching Innovation Project (TIP). TIP is a two-year action-learning project with the overarching goal of creating a “tipping point” in business education to further the teaching of corporate citizenship and values-based leadership.
As part of its TIP goals to integrate business and society issues into Weatherhead’s MBA core curriculum as well as the entire MBA and management education experience, B·A·W·B began a pilot project in fall of 2004 with the Saturday MBA program to incorporate issues of social impact into the core curriculum. On the horizon is the development of a major or minor concentration – as well as a masters degree - in the area of sustainability/social impact management, including several optional “streams” whereby students select to develop expertise in specific areas of social impact management or to obtain a general proficiency in those topic areas.
A central component of TIP is the exchange of ideas between and among leaders of corporate executive training and development, human resources and business school faculty. TIP representatives from each school convened in June 2004 at GE Crotonville, GE’s John F. Welch Leadership Center (USA), in January 2005 at Monterrey Tec (Mexico), and they will convene again in January 2006 at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa).
