Staff spotlight: Sonia Winner, associate dean for external relations
Posted 3.20.07Weatherheadlines recently sat down with Sonia Winner, associate dean for external relations, to learn more about what lured her to the Weatherhead School, her goals for her first 30 days, and her favorite Cleveland places.
Q: What is your current job title and what responsibilities do you have in your position?
My current title is associate dean for external relations. In this capacity, I serve as chief development and external relations officer. My responsibilities include supervision of annual fund, special gifts, alumni affairs, corporate and foundation activities, marketing, external affairs and events, and publications. As such, I supervise development and marketing staff. I'm also a member of the senior management team for the Weatherhead School.
Q: How long have you worked at Case Western Reserve University?
Since March 1999.
Q: From where do you originally hail? What brought you to Cleveland/Northeast Ohio?
I moved around quite a bit as a child (18 times before high school) but I consider my hometown to be Centerville, OH. Love brought me to Cleveland. I married a Cleveland boy. Clevelanders are like salmon. They always return home.
Q: If someone needs to find you throughout the day, what is the most likely place you are located?
I plan to spend a considerable amount of time with alumni and other friends of the Weatherhead School.
Q: What aspects of your current job lured you to the Weatherhead School?
The leadership of the faculty and the new dean, Mohan Reddy. There is tremendous potential here. Also, I accomplished a lot as the associate dean for the law school. It was time for me to grow.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish in your first 30 days?
I hope to gain a sense of the culture at the Weatherhead School and how my role can further the success of the school.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Travel, yoga, biking, spending time with my family and my two puppies (Zeus and Gigi).
Q: What is your favorite aspect of Cleveland/NE Ohio?
I love the Holden Arboretum and the Towpath.
Q: What is one surprising fact about yourself that you would like to share with the Weatherhead community?
I was born in the Philippines.
