Over fall break, ten graduate MSM-Finance students headed to New York City to meet with three major financial companies: Bloomberg, StockTwit, and Yahoo Finance.
The trek provided the opportunity for students to connect real-life business activities in research, publication, programming and financial analysis with what they are learning in the classroom while also networking with executives and their team members. Students met with several individuals from each company to discuss what a day in the life is like, the career path of each person what keeps them excited about their company and their role.
The executives opened up about what qualities they look for in students when hiring, which included quick learners, programming skills and a deep knowledge of the financial industry. They also got a chance to see Bloomberg TV and radio from their media booth while live and on the air.
“The true value of these treks are two-fold,” said Michael Niro, program director for MSM-Finance. “Obviously the networking and face-to-face dialogue is important. But what we see is students are getting a new perspective on their career. Many students don’t really know what path they want from their career until they get out there and see it in action. This gives each student an opportunity to find their path before graduating.”
This was the first out-of-town city trek of the semester for the group, with plans to complete more in the spring semester. The MSM-Finance program has reached new heights this year by creating several additional networking opportunities for the students including a speaker series with six separate guest speakers and a Career Panel Day, which featured 17 corporate leaders across four panels that were aligned to each of the program’s degree tracks.
