Weatherhead’s MSM-Business Analytics program has introduced a unique Industry Mentorship initiative that pairs each of its students with professionals working in the field of analytics. This coming year, students will get the chance to work with 12 mentors from insurance giant Progressive as the result of the enthusiasm of Sravanthi Vallampati, Lead Systems Analyst and a liaison between the program and Progressive.
Vallampati, who has a penchant for teaching and coaching,
was a mentor in the program last year. By sharing her experience with her
colleagues, she was able to recruit new industry experts to the program.
“They saw my excitement and energy on one side and on the
other side they saw true value,” says Vallampati. “The mentors see the value in being conduits between
what’s being offered in schools and what we’re doing in the industry. I think
it only behooves all of us to invest in the future of analytics.”
Progressive has a history of giving back, through both
contributions and through coaching and mentorship. In 1999, Peter B.
Lewis, then Chairman of Progressive Insurance, donated $36.9 million to the
Weatherhead School for the Frank Gehry-designed building that bears his name. This year, the company matched $4.6 million
of charitable donations from employees by 100%, which benefited 3800 different
charities. Vallampati in part credits Progressive’s giving culture for the
success of this partnership. Not only are employees given time to coach our
students, but the company also invites students into the office to see a day in
the life of an analytics professional.
