Murthy has an offer with Deloitte Consulting to work as a Senior Consultant in the Tech Strategy and Analysis practice based out of Dallas, Texas, beginning in July.
Murthy learned of the opportunity during the Chicago career trek organized by the Career Management Office at Weatherhead. He reached out to Mark Wipper, the director of development at the Kelvin Smith Library, who connected him with Gerald Doyle, Director of Business Development in Deloitte’s Cleveland office. After several interactions, Doyle forwarded Murthy’s resume on to Tara Maggi, Deloitte’s recruiter in their Cleveland office. Soon after, Murthy got the call for an interview.
Murthy cites classes with Simon Peck, Richard Osborne, Sam Thomas and Mohan Reddy as being particularly key in helping him understand the core principles of consulting and finance. This background was crucial for the case analysis Murthy conducted during his interview with Deloitte.
Murthy’s relationship with Deloitte began in India as an Analyst/Consultant, a position in which he rarely got a chance to interact with clients. Murthy used to only work on the implementation phase of projects, which hampered the overall execution of the project. He could only relate to the technical aspects behind solutions, but not the actual business implications of solutions to the client.
In his new role, Murthy will work closely with clients in various industries on-site. By engaging in daily interactions with them, he will analyze their pain points and identify long-term solutions that could potentially improve their overall business. He will then delegate the technical work back to his on-site counterparts and act as a liaison between the team and the client. This new level of client interaction is exciting for Murthy.
Murthy maintained relationships with managers he worked with at Deloitte in India before beginning his graduate work at Weatherhead. Both Yasim Kolathayil and Siva Murugesan constantly encouraged Murthy to stay in touch with the organization and to keep up with current happenings within the organization. These connections and mentorship ultimately helped Murthy secure his new position with Deloitte.
Murthy believes that the management skills he acquired during his MBA will help him manage teams effectively and develop relationships with clients he works with at Deloitte.
