The AACSB Board of Directors has selected Weatherhead MAcc and PhD alumnus Thomas (Tom) Robinson as President and CEO of AACSB International.
Tom is currently Managing Director of the Americas at the CFA Institute—a global non-profit educational membership and educational certification organization that oversees the credentialing for the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation. Headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, the CFA Institute has offices in New York, Hong Kong, London, and Brussels, with 575 employees worldwide. The CFA Institute generates more than $250 million in annual revenues, and has more than 3,000 volunteers engaged with furthering the organization’s mission.
Described as a highly effective leader, Tom brings a diverse background which spans the private sector, academe, and association management. Through his role as Managing Director, Tom has provided leadership to CFA Institute’s largest region, which includes Canada, the US, the Caribbean and Latin America. There, he leads a cross-functional team which participates in developing and implementing global strategy, while engaging with stakeholders regionally.
Robinson is also responsible for the Key Stakeholder Services Division, which services members and candidates globally, and is co-executive sponsor of CFA Institute’s Future of Finance Initiative. At CFA Institute, he also served as the Managing Director of Education, and provided global vision and leadership for a 100+ member team, which produced and delivered educational content and programs for candidates, members, other investment professionals and universities.
Prior to joining CFA Institute, Tom was a tenured accounting faculty member for 14 years at the University of Miami. He also practiced public accounting and financial planning for 10 years. Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master's and doctorate from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. He also holds certifications as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA).
As President and CEO, Tom will work alongside the Board and AACSB’s global network of staff, members, and volunteers to bridge AACSB’s current and prospective visioning initiatives. Such initiatives will build upon the inimitable leadership structure, business foundation, and organizational legacy that John Fernandes will leave behind upon his retirement.
Tom's strategic leadership experience and global business knowledge, coupled with his unique perspective on business education, will help AACSB in its efforts to better identify–and ultimately shape–the roles that management and management education should play. His understanding of the certification process, experience in building and servicing new markets, and expertise in developing educational programming will also help further enhance AACSB’s level of quality assurance, thought leadership, and membership services at the global level.
Tom will begin his new position effective March 1, and John will remain on board with AACSB to assist with the transition until the end of April. A press release announcing the new CEO is scheduled for worldwide distribution on Tuesday, January 13, and a more complete copy of Tom’s bio can be found on the AACSB website.
