New! Current legal issues in health care

Posted 2.16.2007

8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

February 16

This seminar will present a variety of current legal issues and decisions impacting health care organizations. The program will focus on recent legal developments of which health care executives should be aware for proper operation of their facilities and to prepare for the future.

Legal issues surrounding consumer-driven health care. The consumer-driven health care movement raises a number of legal issues, including the legal liability of health care providers under a consumer-driven health care system in which patients take primary responsibility for health care decision-making. The seminar will explore the impact on informed consent, patient access to complementary and alternative medicine, and the legal significance of an arm’s length approach to delivering health care services.

Health care issues in the 2008 presidential election. Health care will play a major role in the November 2008 elections. This seminar will examine proposals to contain health care costs, expand coverage of the uninsured, and revise Medicare and Medicaid, and will explore the impact of ethical and religious values on health policy.

Trends in liability. New proposals for reforming the malpractice system, such as health courts, will be discussed and evaluated, as well as developments in hospital corporate liability, the National Practitioner Data Bank and EMTALA.
