When Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, LLC needed to develop their next generation of leaders, the company turned to Weatherhead for help. Earlier thi
s month, 34 directors and general managers throughout the organization completed a 9-month long customized leadership development program, known as the Bendix® Strategic Leadership Program (SLP).
A team of Weatherhead faculty, including Sayan Chatterjee, Richard Boyatzis, Scott Fine, Ron Fry, Melvin Smith and Betty Vandenbosch, collaborated with subject matter experts within Bendix to link their content and areas of expertise to the business context that managers face everyday. The result was a 10-day multidisciplinary curriculum delivered at Weatherhead between September 2005 and March 2006. The program included topics such as competitive advantage, emotional intelligence, marketing, finance, system thinking and leading change. Throughout the experience, participants worked on action learning projects designed to provide both an immediate laboratory for leaders to apply classroom learnings and immediate impact for the company.
The response from the SLP participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Sharon Seitz, Product Planning and Marketing Director - Charging Systems,
shared, "By going through the program as a group, we now have a common vocabulary and context to refer back to. I have already used the concepts during the last six months and can remind fellow students of the learnings and application to our current opportunity.” Looking to the future, Weatherhead and Bendix will meet again soon to consider ways to keep the learning and development alive for the individuals and the organization. Mark McCollough, Manager of Compressor Engineering, remarked, “I am elated to see the commitment to developing future Bendix leaders from within the organization. I am further elated to be a part of such an excellent program."
