Abstract

This case describes how Fairmount Minerals adopted sustainability as a valuable lens for business strategy. Beginning in 2005 Fairmount Minerals increased the focus on sustainable development through equal consideration of people, planet and prosperity. With time they evolved to integrate voices of various stakeholders in defining sustainable development at each stage of their value chain. The case allows the instructor to highlight how by integrating a concern for people and planet with a concern for profitability a business can engage in innovations that bring prosperity for the business as well as its stakeholders. It can drill down to understand the outcomes, objectives and capabilities that are required to integrate these different concerns. From the dominant business logic of concern for customers and shareholders this case explores how expanding that logic to all stakeholders can lead to innovations
