Faith Traditions and Practices in the Workplace Vol I: The Role of Religion in Unprecedented Times
This paper analyzes ethical traditions and moral responsibility from sacred scriptures of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (the Torah, Talmud, Bible, and Qur’an) providing surprising commonality in guidelines for behaving in morally responsible ways in business during these unprecedented times. The purpose is to bring insights of these faith communities to public conversation for development of a more sustainable workplace through moral discourse. Religiously derived ethics can be drawn on for behavior and workplace practices, even for individuals unaffiliated with organized religion. These form one source of our earliest ethical education about integrity in character. The sacred texts, across these faith traditions display considerable, unrecognized, agreement on behavioral standards for workplace behavior characterized by integrity through action. These commonalities can be drawn on to guide morally responsible behavior between diverse groups of managers and employees in our rapidly globalized world with religious tensions increasing, and workers confronting and resolving moral challenges about right and wrong in people’s lives. Financial scandals, economic crises, a global pandemic, and issues of racial and gender equity abound. Sacred texts have much to say about poverty relief, environmental stewardship, community support, human rights and equal opportunity.
