Coaching Background & Approach

Loren’s extensive coaching experience spans corporate, healthcare, long-term care, and not-for-profit client organizations. His focus in coaching is helping clients find their passion and mobilize their distinctive strengths and energy for sustained, desired change. Loren follows a holistic approach to coaching that encompasses individuals’ multiple life contexts with a special interest in health and fitness. He helps leaders and professionals become more engaging to their constituencies and more effective in their relationships at work and in other life spheres through the development of emotional and social competencies (ESC) such as empathy, emotional self-control, and inspirational leadership.

Loren was trained in ESC by Dr. Richard Boyatzis who is one of the foremost leading researchers in this area. Loren has designed and conducted many training workshops and executive coaching sessions to help clients understand the composition and importance of ESC and how these competencies can help to improve individual and organizational performance. A sample list of organizations for which he provided coaching services includes Alcoa, Barnes Group, Bendix, Child and Family Service, Eaton Corporation, Kula Hospital, Lana’i Community Hospital, Maui Memorial Medical Center, Sabre Holdings, Sherwin-Williams, Swagelok, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Professional & Teaching Experience

Loren held senior Human Resource Management and Finance positions with the Canadian Federal Government. In addition to his extensive experience as a manager, an independent consultant, and an executive coach, Loren has also held adjunct faculty positions at five universities in three countries where he taught management and leadership courses in the undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs. Most recently, he was a Visiting Professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology in Beijing, CN where he taught in the MBA program. At Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Loren taught leadership courses in the undergraduate, MBA and MEM programs and was a Weatherhead Affiliate instructor and and continues to serve as an executive coach in executive education programs. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Management in the Department of Management and Leadership in the College of Business and Public Management at the University of La Verne in southern California where he teaches various management and leadership courses in undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs. His consulting activities center on emotional intelligence and Appreciative Inquiry for individual and organizational change and development.


One main question guides Loren’s research agenda: What drives sustained, desired change? The central theme of Loren’s research is relationship building. He is intrigued by what makes a high quality or resonant connection that allows individuals to be in sync with each other and yield effective outcomes. While he continues to examine organizational outcomes of relationship building, his current research focuses more on dyadic helping relationships especially between physicians and patients. Loren has published in peer-reviewed journals as well as presented at regional and national academic conferences. Education & Certification

Loren earned a PhD in Organizational Behavior and the Certificate in Developing Leadership through Emotional Intelligence from CWRU; an MBA, an MA/HRM, and a certificate in Organizational Change from Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, HI; and a BComm (Honours) and two certificates in Human Resource Management from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, MB, Canada from where he originates. Loren is also certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) in the United States and holds the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation in Canada. Loren is accredited by The Hay Group to use the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI) and the Emotional and Social Competence Inventory (ESCI).


On the personal side, Loren is married and lives in southern California. When not teaching, researching, or consulting, Loren can be found pumping iron in the gym as he is a competitive natural bodybuilder.
