A New Approach to Family Business Survival: Generation Integration
Dr. Kathy Kessler Overbeke and Dr. John Neff have developed a new way to address family business cross- generation continuity to replace the traditional succession model. Their method, “Generation Integration” is rooted in their individual research conducted at Weatherhead.
Dr. Overbeke’s and Dr. Neff’s empirical studies discovered that “shared vision,” is crucial to family business survival. This finding implies that traditional succession planning in family businesses is incompatible with family business continuity because of its emphasis on competing generations. Drs. Overbeke and Neff propose a new approach that promotes the strengths of the family to enable the family business to create a competitive edge.
In this presentation, Dr. Overbeke and Dr. Neff use clips from television and movies to discuss the “art of shared vision.” They will also explain their research findings and the implications for “Generation Integration.”
Dr. Overbeke and Dr. Neff are graduates of Weatherhead’s Doctor of Management program and have worked in family businesses for over 25 years. Their individual research is pending publication in peer reviewed research journals and has been presented internationally at the Academy of Management, the Family Firm Institute, The Hamburg Institute for Family Owned Businesses, Tel Aviv University, and other venues.
