Sustainable Cleveland 2019

Building an Economic Engine to Empower a Green City on a Blue Lake

Co-convened by: City of Cleveland, Fowler Center for Sustainable Value, GreenCityBlueLake Institute

In March 2009, Mayor Jackson announced that he would host Sustainable Cleveland 2019: Building an economic engine to empower a green city on a blue lake, an Appreciative Inquiry summit. “Cleveland and the region will survive this economic downturn, and be better positioned for the future,” said Mayor Jackson. “And for our region – the future is green.”

Work on this summit began in August 2008, when Mayor Frank G. Jackson met with Dr. David Cooperrider of Case Western Reserve University’s Fowler Center for Sustainable Value. They discussed the possibility of hosting a major event to design a transformative economic agenda for Cleveland using Appreciative Inquiry (AI). AI is a collaborative, interactive, and action oriented process for creating change.

From that meeting, ideas emerged for a three-day collaborative summit that would engage the greater Cleveland community, along with national thought leaders and regional stakeholders. At the end of the three days, the Summit participants will have generated an action plan for Cleveland’s economic future, guiding our efforts for ten years, to 2019. This plan will be designed to redevelop Cleveland’s economy based on green industries, support business growth, protect the environment, and, most importantly, create opportunities for individuals to prosper.

Sustainable Cleveland 2019 will be held August 12-14. To be successful, we need everyone at the table. Those chosen to participate in the summit are needed for the specific knowledge or perspective they bring to the table. Participants will represent every sector of Cleveland’s community, including blue-collar workers, civic leaders, academicians, corporate executives, artists, neighborhood residents, students, retirees, elected officials and regional stakeholders.

All stakeholders in Cleveland's future are welcome.  To apply for the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Summit, please visit http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/CityofCleveland/Home/Community/ThingsToDo/AISummit/application
