Life Science/Molecular Biology Scientist
I was born in Cuba and moved to Montreal, Canada at a young age. There, I graduated with a BSc (2000) and a PhD (2003) in Biochemistry from McGill University. Since then, I have been a medical scientist, working on understanding the molecular and cellular basis of various pathologies, including cancer (The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, and Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NY, NY), inflammation (NYU Medical Center, NY, NY), and HIV infection (The Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA, and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH). In my current position at CWRU School of Medicine, I lead a NeuroAIDS project aimed at elucidating how the HIV virus replicates in the brain and affects cognitive functions in patients. More than two years ago, I decided to study for an MBA to improve my skills as a manager and as a leader, and to gain significant insights into the business aspect of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical research industries. In May 2017, I expect to graduate with an MBA from Weatherhead School of Management at CWRU. In the personal arena, I am a proud father of a son (22) and a daughter (18), and I am a happily-married man.
