PhD in Organizational Behavior Professional Development

To help students achieve their career aspirations, the Organizational Behavior Department makes available a number of opportunities for learning from, and teaching, others, outside of our classes.

The PhD Seminar presents a forum for exploring and sharing research in varied subfields and sustains a community around continual intellectual growth. The meetings also provide a chance for first- and second-year students to discover their research interests, develop their guiding questions, and strike up creative partnerships. Attendees extend tangible support to these students as they complete their first- and second-year deliverables.

Providing a further avenue for professional development are the emotional intelligence and Appreciative Inquiry Certificate Programs offered through Weatherhead’s Executive Education program. Doctoral students are asked to complete these certificates as a part of their curriculum. Moreover, those who wish to pursue their interest in executive coaching may complete Hay Group’s Emotional and Social Competence Inventory (ESCI) Certification program, also offered through Executive Education.

To build a culture of idea generation and validation through rich conversations, PhD students are encouraged to participate in research events at Weatherhead and outside the school. In the past, OB students have shared their research through Research ShowCASE, an annual university-wide event that highlights ongoing research at Case Western Reserve University and partner institutions University Hospitals, the MetroHealth System, the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Cleveland Clinic. Students are also advised to take part in major conferences including the yearly Academy of Management gathering and the Organizational Behavior Teaching Conference.
