In this continued series exploring the impacts of healthcare reform, Dr. J.B. Silvers will address three key aspects:
- Challenges that healthcare reform will present to providers and purchasers
- Opportunities for new ventures, technology and effectiveness
- Changing roles for employers and insurers
While the specific impacts from healthcare reform are not fully measured or understood yet, the direction and likely impact becomes clearer each day. Soon the actual regulations that will implement the massive reform law will appear giving another source of insight. At each stage of this evolution, organizations that explore this broad reaching issue will be better prepared to weather the bumps and seize the opportunities. For obvious reasons, this program is critical for healthcare providers and institutions to be on the cutting edge of knowledge in this area. In addition, employers making major benefit decisions will find it important. Finally, suppliers of products or services to the sector will find it impossible to determine an appropriate strategy without this knowledge.
Dr. Silvers will draw on his experience as a Commissioner on ProPAC (now MedPAC) regarding payment and on the Joint Commission board dealing with quality to assess how healthcare reform will impact organizations and managers. In addition, his insights as a health insurance CEO and professor of finance will be brought to bear in a lively discussion of future industry structure, consolidation and opportunities.
