Organizational Behavior
is a vital and expanding field dedicated to the generation of new knowledge
that advances the human condition in the world. Approaching its studies
of social and organizational reality from the perspective of human possibility,
Organizational Behavior has relevance to society, based on our concern
for and our understanding of developmental processes in persons, groups,
organizations, interorganizational systems, and the global community at
large. The historical roots of the field stretch back for more than a
century and span across psychiatry, individual and social psychology,
sociology, social philosophy, political science, and anthropology. Today
Organizational Behavior stands as a fertile synthesis of many lines of
theoretical and practical endeavor and defines itself not as just another
discipline but as a generative interdiscipline reaching across boundaries
of all kinds in its quest for comprehensive, penetrating understanding.
The Department of Organizational Behavior at Case
Western Reserve University is internationally recognized as a leader
in the field of organizational analysis and development. As a pioneer,
the department played a major role in defining the nascent interdiscipline
by creating the fields first doctoral program, awarding the first
Ph.D. of its kind in 1964. Currently the department has the nations
largest doctoral program in Organizational Behavior with alumni and students
from all around the world. Life in the department is imbued with a pride
in its past and a spirit of inquiry that continues to inspire new directions
and strengthen its continuing identity as a pioneer. Examples of recent
groundbreaking efforts include:
- A
major conference, drawing together scholars, development
specialists, innovators, and organizational leaders
to address Social Innovations in Global Management.
- The
design and implementation of a new competency oriented,
value-added program of management educationan
MBA to develop competent, insightful and value-oriented
managers for the future.
- Knowledge
generating and integrating symposia on Executive Mind,
Executive Integrity, New Challenges of Management
Education, Executive Appreciation, Organizational
Continuity, and Executive Courage and Organizational
Wisdom.
- Hosting
the Organizational Behavior Teaching Conference (OBTC)
bringing professors and academic leaders from across
the country who are sharing their own and learning
about others best experiences in the classroom arena.
The
field, even as it grows and matures, remains young,
fresh, and dynamic. Its identity is still creatively
diffuse and expanding in multiple directions. Recent
developments in many areas of thoughtfrom studies
into the nature of self-organizing systems, the socially
constructed nature of organizational and cultural reality,
as well as new understandings in areas of future-oriented
learning and human system transformationall have
generated exciting perspectives for a field committed
to research and practice that makes a difference in
the human condition.
