Staff Spotlight: Peggy Sobul, Director of Annual Giving
Weatherheadlines recently sat down with Peggy Sobul, director of annual giving, to learn about the importance of the Annual Fund, being a lifelong Clevelander, and her introvert tendencies.
Q: What is your current job title and what responsibilities do you have in your position?
I am the Director of Annual Giving. My main responsibility is soliciting unrestricted annual gifts for the Weatherhead School of Management
Q: How long have you worked at Weatherhead?
A little over eight years…eight years and four months to be exact!
Q: From where do you originally hail? What brought you to Cleveland?
I was born in Cleveland and although I’ve lived elsewhere, I consider myself a lifelong Clevelander.
Q: If someone needs to find you throughout the day, what is the most likely place you are located?
If I am in the building, I'm most likely in my office.
Q: In your opinion, what do you believe is the best aspect of working at Weatherhead?
Q: You mentioned you are the Director of Annual Giving. Would you please explain a little bit about the Annual Fund?
The Annual Fund is unrestricted dollars that are raised today to spend tomorrow. They can generally be spent at the discretion of the dean, although sometimes they are earmarked for something specific. The Annual Fund is important because we are able to spend it as we get it. There are no spending rules, such as those attached to endowment gifts. With an endowment, you are only able to spend 5% of the principal whereas with an annual fund gift, you can spend the entire amount. So, if you wanted $100,000 to spend on scholarships for instance, you would need an endowment of $2 million or an annual fund gift of $100,000.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy going to the theater, watching sporting events and working out (at least I’m trying to convince myself that I actually like working out!).
Q: What is your favorite season in Cleveland/Northeast Ohio and why?
I like all four seasons, which is why I like Cleveland because we generally have all four. However, if I had to pick one I would say fall because I love it when the leaves change colors.
Q: What is one surprising fact about yourself that you would like to share with the Weatherhead community?
I think most people would be surprised to know that I am basically an introvert and a homebody!
