The Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit (B·A·W·B) is one of the four newly created “Schools within the School” at Weatherhead. This means it is a cross-disciplinary center that is responsible for research and curriculum innovation at the intersection of business and society.

We will be working to advance activities on a theme or subject by reaching out to other units of the university for faculty affiliates, offering majors or minors and workshops in this area, promoting and coordinating research, maintaining fellows or post-doctoral programs, and offering executive education courses. Our four Schools within the School are Global Business Studies, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health and Bioscience, and Business as an Agent of World Benefit.

The Center for B·A·W·B at Weatherhead is clearly a world leader. Over the last 10-15 years the perception has been one of thinking that business people don’t care about the world around them. However, there is a challenge in today’s society for business management schools – in the wake of Enron, WorldCom and others – to graduate ethical, moral business managers. This may not be such a difficult task as more and more students entering business programs are expressing an interest in using their business skills to benefit the world in which they live. B·A·W·B is developing a highly sophisticated way for business management professionals throughout the world to share their stories of how they are using their companies and business skills in highly proficient ways to benefit society.

B·A·W·B facilitates on-line global conferences which bring business educators, owners, and managers together to share ideas and experiences, forge alliances, and develop innovative ways of benefiting the world through business. B·A·W·B’s World Inquiry is a new kind of global dialogue, a way to share stories of successful business innovations that are making a positive impact on society. Only the best innovations are profiled in the B·A·W·B’s Innovation Bank and other publications of the Center. They pave an important path to world-wide sharing of knowledge about successful methods for corporate social responsibility and sustainability, marking the road of hope for a future in which every business will strive to benefit society.

We hope this newsletter will keep you in touch with the important work of the Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit and with the larger Weatherhead community as we move forward with our innovative concept of schools within the school.
