Fowler Center's Appreciative Inquiry Summit Method Helps Leaders Design Green Cities

                            
From August 12-14, Weatherhead's Dr. David Cooperrider facilitated Appreciative Inquiry work with 700 Greater Clevelanders at "Sustainable Cleveland 2019," an AI summit that he called one of the most energized of his career. Mayor Frank G. Jackson and the City of Cleveland enlisted Weatherhead's Fowler Center for Sustainable Value to "build an economic engine to empower a green city on a blue lake." Both groups have collaborated closely over the past year to make the summit a success.

At the summit, twenty action groups worked over three days to design sustainable initiatives that would bolster the economy in northeast Ohio in specific opportunity areas including food, advanced manufacturing, urban land use, transportation, water, and health, The summit was one of the first city-based AI summits and showed that this methodology can be an effective tool for activating a geographic region's economic goals. Cities around the world are now inquiring with Weatherhead about how AI can work for them.

Weatherhead Appoints Three Department Chairs

Weatherhead is proud to announce the appointment of three new department chairs. They are professors Gary Previts (Accountancy), J.B. Silvers (Banking and Finance) and Susan Helper (Economics).

In these leadership roles, they bring combined more than seven decades of experience to their positions. Read the complete story.

Dr. Collopy Named to Design Jury

Congratulations to Dr. Fred Collopy who was recently named to the European Design Management Award jury for 2009.  Collopy was the only professor chosen from North America.The DME Award is a business award that recognizes the skills and leadership of management to implement design in business for commercial success.

Weatherhead Family Business Speaker Series

The world of business has never been more difficult. The world of families has never been more complex. When you put the two together, the complexity grows exponentially.

Most often a family business' decline and ultimate defeat isn't a matter of dollars and cents, it's due to poor planning and miscommunication fueled by underlying tensions and conflicts in the family.  Join Weatherhead and Dr. Ron Reece on Tuesday, October 6 for a presentation that combines lecture and audience participation to examine the advantages and disadvantages of family in business.

We will help owners and other family members recognize ways to capitalize on the family side of family business, and define best practices to insure longevity and profitability.

Be sure to join us for the Weatherhead Happy Hour prior to the event beginning at 5:30pm.

Professor Shane on Minnesota Public Radio

Dr. Scott Shane, the A. Malachi Mixon III Professor in Entrepreneurial Studies, appeared as part of a panel on the Minnesota Public Radio show, Midmorning, to discuss entrepreneurship's bright spots despite the down economy. Listen to program.

Alumni Events

Alumni events are a positive way to reconnect and network with former classmates, faculty, and colleagues.  Please join us for our upcoming 2009-2010 festivities in Cleveland, and throughout the country.  In October, Weatherhead will host the first annual Undergraduate Alumni Reunion.  Representatives from our External Relations Department will also be on the road in Southern California for two networking events: Los Angeles and Newport Beach.  Once the snow starts falling, be sure to save the date for the 36th Annual David A. Bowers Economic Forecast Luncheon slated for December 11.

In the interest of conserving employers' time and resources, Weatherhead School of Management's Career Development Center is collaborating with the Case Career Center to host the Fall 2009 Case Career Fair, which will be held at the Adelbert Gym on Thursday, October 1, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

This is Case's largest career fair and is open to all students and alumni of Case. You do not have to pre-register, just show up if you are interested in meeting employers!

With Weatherhead's students beginning their academic year, our Career Development Center is actively involved in preparing them for the next phase of their careers. Through workshops on networking and resume building, individual coaching appointments, and panels of industry experts, the CDC provides a valuable service to our students. Last year, the CDC conducted 915 student appointments, reviewed 275 resumes and cover letters, and posted 779 job and internship opportunities.
