Donor Spotlight Interview - Todd McCuaig

Posted 10/31/2007

What is your current title and position?  What does your current job entail?
I am Managing Director and co-owner of Cornerstone Industrial Group, LLC. My partner and I acquire and own strong, niche manufacturing businesses in the Midwest with the objective of creating value over the long run. The two primary aspects of my work are: the acquisition process, including finding, analyzing, negotiating, financing and closing new acquisitions; and, the value creation process, in which I work actively at the board level to guide management in the execution of a long term strategy we develop together.

What brought you to Weatherhead?
I attended Weatherhead as part of my transition to the Cleveland business community after re-locating here from Toronto, Canada. Weatherhead had the strongest reputation among business schools in the region, and offered a one-year MBA program that best suited my needs.

Why do you choose to donate to Weatherhead?
I donate to Weatherhead because I value education and understand that educational institutions require financial support from willing donors. I have benefited from Weatherhead in my career and in the friendships I have made through association with the school; it is right to give back to enable others to benefit as I have. I think Weatherhead is an important asset for this region; supporting the school is in our self interest as a community. Finally, the act of giving to a worthy cause brings joy!

What is your favorite Weatherhead memory?
My favorite Weatherhead memories involve the wonderful and talented people I shared time with at the school, including class-mates, faculty and staff. From introductions on the first day of classes, to exciting guest speakers, to touch football games, to standing on the desk for a “gorilla clap”, I have a collage of pictures in my mind.

Do you have any advice for Weatherhead students currently in the same program you were in?
Work hard, follow your dreams, understand that the path to your objective isn’t always a straight line. I subscribe to the idea that life is a journey, not a destination. So, if at any time you are unhappy with what you are doing, make a change.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Cheer the Indians to a World Series victory, or even a great run at one! I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, playing golf, and helping out at my church.

If you could invite any person (living or dead) to dinner, who would it be and why?
Winston Churchill to talk about history. Chris Matthews to talk about politics. Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to talk golf.
