Barcelona & Modernity: Picasso, Gaudí, Miró, Dalí will be on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art October 15, 2006 – January 7, 2007. Jointly organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in association with the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, this is the first exhibition in North America to examine a remarkable 71-year period (1868–1939) when Barcelona transformed itself from a city of provincial culture into one of Europe’s most dynamic centers of modernist art and architecture.

The Career Development Center kicked off its Career Fridays sessions on Friday, September 8th with a panel of second-year MBA students as well as another panel of Weatherhead alumni. The two groups gave advice and answered questions from an audience of about forty-five first-year MBA students. Career Fridays will continue on the 15th of September with a session on case interviewing with Mark Cosentino, author of Case In Point.

On Friday, April 7th and Saturday, April 8th the Weatherhead School of Management hosted the 15th annual National Undergraduate Business Symposium on the Case campus and at local Cleveland landmarks including the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. This year representatives from 27 different schools attended the conference including: University of Pennsylvania; University of California, Berkeley; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; New York University; and Wake Forest University.

A landmark forum, Business as an Agent of World Benefit: Management Knowledge Leading Positive Change, will be held October 23-25, 2006 and will unite top business leaders and educators to focus on ways of doing business that are both profitable and successful in addressing the world’s most pressing social needs. The three-day forum will bring together the efforts of the UN Global Compact, the Academy of Management, and Case’s Weatherhead School of Management. Over 400 leading business executives and management scholars from around the world will explore ways in which business can be a leading force in eradicating poverty, enhancing the environment, and advancing peace—while still prospering financially. An additional 3,000 people worldwide are expected to participate through satellite and Internet links.

One hundred students, faculty and staff recently gathered for the annual Net Impact Case Bowl to watch six Weatherhead professors debate a case about a corporate social responsibility issue. The Case Bowl raised over $900 for TUFS, a local United Way charity located in Tremont.

Developing the Microfinancing Business Case

It began when the founder of Janalakshmi, a microfinance institution based in Bangalore, India, read Dr. Sayan Chatterjee's book Failsafe Strategies: Profit and Grow From Risks that others Avoid (Wharton School Publishers 2004) and called him for feedback on the risk in microfinance models. Since then Chatterjee, a professor in the MAPS department at Case's Weatherhead School of Management, has written a business case about Hindustan Lever's Project Shakti, joined with Professor C.N.V. Krishnan, also of Weatherhead's MAPS department, to create the Institute for Studies in Microfinance and Poverty Alleviation housed within The Center for B·A·W·B, and traveled to India to find out more about MFI's.

In order to meet the growing demand for managers with expertise in health care, the Weatherhead School is joining forces with The Cleveland Clinic to launch the Health Management Scholars Program. Beginning in the fall of 2006 the Weatherhead School will admit up to four Health Management Scholars into its full-time MBA program. In addition to taking the school’s Health Systems Management concentration, the scholars will fulfill their action learning requirements at the Clinic and will complete summer internships there. The scholars will also attend a seminar in which Clinic managers will serve as guest speakers.
