Annual Academy of Management Meeting Provides an Opportunity to Explore Business and Society Issues

What is the new vision of management in the 21st Century? This question helped bring together over 6,000 people, representing 62 countries, for the 65th Annual Academy of Management Meeting. Lindsey Godwin, a Case Ph.D. candidate working with the Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit, attended the annual Academy of Management Meeting and gives an interesting recap of some of the business and society discussions that took place there.

The Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit (B·A·W·B) is one of the four newly created "Schools within the School" at Weatherhead. This means it is a cross-disciplinary center that is responsible for research and curriculum innovation at the intersection of business and society.
Cornell Hosts 11th Annual Bell Conference

Business leaders, academics, and members of the public and non-profit sectors came together in July 2005 for the 11th annual BELL (Business* Environment* Learning* Leadership) Conference, hosted by the Johnson Graduate School of Management and the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University together with World Resources Institute (WRI). Linda Robson, Ph.D. candidate in Organizational Behavior at Weatherhead, attended and gives a first person account.
Capitalism at the Crossroads: From Obligation to Opportunity

This month we review Stuart Hart's new book "Capitalism at the Crossroads: From Obligation to Opportunity". Taking the view that business is uniquely equipped at this point in history to lead us toward a sustainable world in the years ahead, Hart argues that corporations are the only entities in the world today with the technology, resources, capacity, and global reach required. The book's optimistic message is that, properly focused, the profit motive can accelerate the transformation toward global sustainability with nonprofits, governments, and multilateral agencies all playing crucial roles as collaborators.

The Center for B·A·W·B has moved to a newly renovated, central location in Room 208 of the Weatherhead School of Management. As an innovative, global center it is appropriate that we are housed in a unique section of the Peter B. Lewis building, designed by world reknowned architect, Frank Gehry, to reflect Weatherhead's international reputation for innovative management education.

The breakfast series will be held throughout the academic year and feature Weatherhead faculty speaking about their research, activities and publications.

The Wall Street Journal suggested FEMA could learn some things from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. about emergency management and preparation. Twenty-four hours before the storm actually made landfall on the Gulf Coast, Wal-Mart had ordered its warehouses to deliver a variety of emergency supplies to designated staging areas so company stores would be able to reopen quickly.

Fairmount Minerals Company held a three-day Appreciative Inquiry summit with Dr. David Cooperrider, founder of The Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit, to build on its core strengths and become a more sustainable company. The largest producer of industrial sand in the United States, Fairmount wants to lead the industry in becoming a sustainable development company.
