Cleveland Rocks - Cleveland Jargon

 

The following is a short list of jargon and terms to help students sound like lifelong Clevelanders:

Blossom - located in Cuyahoga Falls, the Blossom Music Center is an indoor/outdoor dome offering entertainment ranging from pop to opera. Blossom is also the summer home of the world renowned Cleveland Orchestra.

Cleveland Playhouse - located at 8500 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, the Playhouse is America's first and oldest resident professional theater.

Clinic - the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, located at 9500 Euclid Avenue, is world renowned for medical research and treatment.

Dead Man's Curve - a treacherous curve on I-90 (the innerbelt), just prior to entering the shoreway.

Emerald Necklace - Also known as the Metroparks, greater Cleveland's Metropolitan Park System, comprised of more than 18,000 acres of land, ten major reservations and six golf courses. The park system's layout resembles the shape of a necklace.

Flats - This area is known for its bars and restaurants. It is the land on both sides of the Cuyahoga River (Cuyahoga means crooked), which used to be dominated by warehouses and heavy industry factories.

Gold Coast - area in the west suburban community of Lakewood on the south shore of Lake Erie rich in quality apartments and condominiums.

Hopkins - Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Innerbelt - a freeway running through the heart of Downtown Cleveland connecting I-71 and I-90 (the Shoreway). The Innerbelt offers numerous exits to key areas in Downtown Cleveland.

Ohio City - a renovated neighborhood on Cleveland's near west side.

Playhouse Square - three separate theaters in Downtown Cleveland located between East 14th and East 17th Streets on Euclid Avenue.. Playhouse Square is not affiliated with the Cleveland Playhouse.

R.T.A. - The Regional Transit Authority, which connects the east and west suburban areas of Greater Cleveland via bus and trail lines (The Rapid).

Severance Hall - Permanent home of the Cleveland Orchestra in University Circle next to the Kelvin Smith Library

Shoreway - the section of Interstate 90 running parallel with the south shore of Lake Erie and stretching from just west of Downtown Cleveland eastward to the Interstate 271 spur (a.k.a. Route 2).

The Q - A nickname for the Quicken Loans Arena and home to the Cleveland Cavaliers.  The Q also hosts many other entertainment events throughout the year, from musical concerts to the circus.

UH - University Hospitals.
