Visa Information
By now, you should have received your Form I-20 (the Certificate of Non-immigration F-1 Student Status) from Case Western Reserve University. You should either have obtained, or be in the process of obtaining, a valid F-1 or J-1 student visa (issued by the American embassy/consulate in your country) in order to enter the United States as a full-time student.
For complete information on visa types and requirements, please visit the International Student Services website: http://studentaffairs.case.edu/international/. To contact the international Students Services office directly, call: 216-368-2517 or e-mail International@case.edu.
Visa types and advantages:
The F-1: Most international students apply for the F-1 visa. This visa allows you to work in the U.S. between the first and second year of the MBA, and/or for 12 months after you receive the MSM or MBA degree. The greatest advantage of the F-1 is that students are not subject to a residency requirement. (Many J-1 visa holders must return to their home country for two years after they receive their MBA degree.)
The J-1: If you are receiving substantial support from your home country or U.S. government or are receiving a scholarship from your home school or employer, you may qualify for the J-1 visa. This visa allows you to work in the U.S. between your first and second year of the MBA, and/or for 18 months after you receive your MBA or MSM degree. But please note that you may be required to return to your home country for two years, before you can take advantage of the 18-month post-degree work experience. The primary advantage of the J-1 is that your spouse is eligible to obtain the J-2 visa, and work legally in the U.S. while you are a full-time student. (The spouses of F-1 visa holders are not eligible to work in the U.S.)
