Entry into the United States

Before entering the United States for full-time study, international students will need:

1. A passport that is valid throughout your entire stay in the United States.
2. A valid F-1 or J-1 visa, issued by the American embassy or consulate in your country.

At the port of entry into the U.S., immigration officials will stamp the I-20 and issue an I-94 card. Make sure the I-94 card is stamped with “F-1” and “D/S.” Although it is not a requirement, it is always wise to carry both the passport and the I-94 card when traveling within the U.S.

Important:
Keep a photocopy of all your documents in a safe place.

Non-immigrant visa holders, once admitted to the U.S. are monitored by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) of the United States Justice Department. You may be asked to furnish your visa information at any time. The following applies to international students entering the U.S. on an F-1 visa:

• You must maintain full-time student status for at least 8 months of the school year.

• Because the I-20 F-1 visa is a permit to enter the U.S., you can remain in the U.S. for the entire period of your degree study without having to renew your visa.

• You are eligible to work at Case Western Reserve University for up to 20 hours a week during the academic year and during vacation periods.

• You are eligible to apply at the International Student Office for 12 months of optional practical training.
