The Weatherhead School of Management is a catalyst for advancing bold ideas that have a lasting impact on society and future leaders. The Information Systems' department research led to Manage by Designing, a school-wide curriculum initiative that is the first in the world to infuse design skills and principles into management education.

A major challenge of integrating design and management is expanding the application of design beyond the familiar domains of a firm’s products and ubiquitous information technologies to include the design of services, processes, structures, and environments across all functions of the organization. This requires the school-wide engagement of faculty in applying design methods and concepts to the full scope of activities that fall under management: strategies, supply chains, reward systems, and controls, as well as business intelligence and learning capabilities.

Design Issues

Founded in 1982 and published by the MIT Press, internationally acclaimed Design Issues is one of the premier design journals in the world. It focuses on the history, theory, and criticism of design in all of its forms, including graphic and communication design, industrial design, interaction design, and management and organizational design.

Managing as Designing

Published in 2004 and co-edited by Richard Boland, PhD, and Fred Collopy, PhD, Managing as Designing continues to be a widely-sited resource for this emerging discipline.
