Health Reform: What Comes Next in Policy and Management
On the path to reform in healthcare, we have passed two big milestones—passage of the Affordable Care Act and its review by the Supreme Court. The next is obvious—the November election. However, after that comes the question of how to make it work and at this point, management becomes paramount. To explore these issues, we have four members of the WSOM faculty with unique experience that relates to the question. First, Professor J. B. Silvers will review where the policy makers anticipate outcomes that may not be realized in the actions of providers and how the ACA is likely to be changed as a result in the next few years. But past any adjustments to the law, reform will work or fail, largely on the actions of insurance companies, the choices of consumers and the service levels of providers. Professor Mark Votruba has studied health insurance extensively and will explore changes that are likely there. Professor Mariana Carrera will share her findings on how consumers make decisions on pharmaceuticals. Professor Richard Buchanan will add insights he has learned on what providers are trying to do to enhance patient experience. After a brief review of each of these areas, panelists and attendees will discuss how it all fits together.
