Research Requirement
The inquiry courses in the first three semesters
deal with identifying and conceptualizing one’s topic of interest and designing
and collecting structured qualitative
information to refine and contextualize
one’s conceptual model. The sequence in
the fourth and fifth semesters addresses
survey research and quantitative methods
in the testing of hypotheses embedded
in the conceptual model.
Each student has a faculty advisor whose expertise pertains to the focus of the study. Projects are evaluated by a faculty review committee three times over the first five semesters. Each student will write a manuscript length paper of sufficient quality
to submit to an appropriate journal or to present at a conference.
As a final requirement, each student
writes an overview statement introducing their conceptual, qualitative, and quantitative research reports, making substantive observations and conclusions about each project, and presenting a personal reflective statement about its significance to the author. This overview statement and
the three approved research reports serve as the
dissertation requirement of the Program.

Independent Work
Opportunities for independent work
occur in the Program. Each of the
integrative courses requires papers of
varying lengths that call for critical analysis
and independent thinking. Research topics are determined individually by each student. Research activities are supported through the structure of research courses and through activities designated as Directed Studies Research.
