MSM-OR/SC STEM OPT

OPT Extension for Students in Technical Fields

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a temporary employment opportunity for international students that is offered by the U.S. government. International students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields may apply for a 17-month extension of the OPT period, meaning that they are eligible to work in the US for up to 29 months after graduation. The MSM-OR/SC qualifies as a STEM OPT degree.

“Over the last few years of economic uncertainty, companies haven’t been sponsoring as many international interns and employees,” explains Collin Hanson, former program director of the MSM-OR/SC degree at Weatherhead. “It’s obviously a difficult job market. The OPT extension for students in STEM fields enables graduates of the MSM-OR/SC to work for up to 2 ½ years in the U.S. and really get to know their craft in that extra time, the better to take that knowledge home with them at the end of their stay.”
