The Master of Science in Management-Finance (MSM-Finance) program is led by our world-class faculty who teach in our highly-ranked undergraduate finance program (ranked first by Business Week twice in the last four years). The hands-on involvement of our faculty provides students with a solid foundation in finance while allowing the opportunity to apply key concepts and theory in the classroom.
Upon completion of the program, you will be prepared to pursue a number of exciting career opportunities in investment banking, corporation finance, risk management, banking, private equity, investment management, and corporate advising.
Our MSM-Finance program is 30-credit-hour program that can be completed in as little as 2 semesters. What makes our program unique is we offer the flexibility of staying longer and taking additional electives, having a capstone project experience, and the opportunity to complete an internship during the summer break, to reinforce learning. Thus, the program can be completed in 9, 12, 16, or 21 months, such that every student can tailor the pace with which he/she moves through the program to suit his/her own professional development goal. Along with our top rated faculty, and the Career Management Office, I am here to personally facilitate networking, resume building, assist students in their career search and help develop relationships with employers. Is This Program Right for Me?
While many MSM-Finance degrees focus on quantitative skills, Weatherhead's distinctive program prepares students to make immediate and skilled contributions to corporation finance, financial modeling, valuation, risk management, and corporate consulting. Candidates learn from the A-list faculty whose hands-on involvement with students is a point of pride at Weatherhead; meanwhile, our Cleveland location, home to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, is an important banking and healthcare center in the United States. You can transition right into our master's program after completing your undergraduate degree. No work experience is needed. Typical undergraduate majors include business, economics, physics, biology, accounting, engineering and math.
Lessons learned in our MSM-Finance program go beyond quantitative skills. Students gain a solid background in focused financial theory and often gain a network of regional, national and international business contacts. When asked what life skills they'll take away from the program, graduating MSM-Finance students often mention that they learned how to:
- Speak and understand the language of business
- Pitch an idea
- Work effectively with superiors, co-workers and groups
- Manage time more effectively
- Take feedback and deal with pressure and frustration
- Write effectively in the business environment
Students also stated that they learned:
- Finance can be more of an art than an exact science
- Stories are as important as numbers
- Creating good first impressions are key
- Simply crunching numbers is not enough; conceptual understanding is key
- The big picture comes before details: It's important to exercise common sense when looking at numbers
Consider a Double Degree
The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University and the School of Economics and Management at Tongji University in Shanghai (SEM-Tongji) have jointly developed a dual-degree program offering both the MSM-Finance degree from Weatherhead and the MBA degree from SEM-Tongji. The program, designed for part-time students and offering classes outside normal working hours, may be completed in just five semesters, but students must complete the program within five years.
